Well it has been a magnificent weekend in the great city of Chicago. The Chicago Air and Water Show is one of the largest free events of its kind in the United States. The Office of the Mayors Special Events stated about 2 million people attended this year’s show.

The Golden Knights have been performing at the Chicago Air and Water Show since 1960.Things have changed quite a bit since then. In the old days the team would actually jump right into Lake Michigan’s frigid waters and have to carry their parachutes over to dry out in the gym prior to their afternoon performance. There would be chutes suspended everywhere with huge fans blowing to get them dry.

The Gold Demonstration Team flawlessly made five spectacular performances for over 2 million spectators. The Tandem Team made ten tandems with media which generated thousands of dollars of free publicity for the Army. Each of these passengers actually put their lives in the hands of these Soldiers. This is a tool the team uses to introduce the American public to the Armies skills, professionalism, disciplines, comradery and team work. These individuals were able to meet and spend time with Soldiers who have recently redeployed and protected them from harm’s way.

A big thank you to the teams hidden Heroes, “Team Six!!!” CW4 Dan Mordarski, CW4 Ron Turner and crew chief SGT Jusseppe Silvagnoli spent countless hours preparing the flight plain, working with the FAA and maintaining the C-31 Friendship Fokker flown for this event. Their dedication, professionalism and never ending work load are to be commended. These performances would never happen without our outstanding pilots, maintenance technicians and crew.

Through participating at this event I was able to secure a well known individual to be a tandem passenger for next year’s 53rd air show and I am sure all the ladies will be opting for front row seats. The distinguished and handsome Walt Willey, better known as Pine Valleys Jackson Montgomery or Erica Kane’s 10th husband.

The days months and years the men and women spend on the team are priceless. The bonds forged are forever imbedded in to our souls. Former teammates Mark Weiner and Bill Wilson came out and met some of the newer team members and spent time telling tales from there vintage years.

Thank you John Duda, our special brother and honorary Golden Knight for everything you do. It would not be possible without you!!!
Until the next time the GK 1st Lady/GK Mama is blessed to have had such a great GK Day.
